A Pink Palooza

Although the winter has been very mild so far for January, it's still

cold and gray with lots of rain. I feel like I need a little bit of cheer so

let's have a ~ Pink Palooza! A whole lot of happy pink pics.

A crystal bowl filled with pink carnations.

A sweet rose covered pink cup and saucer.

A galvanized metal planter filled with cottage pinkness.

An indoor pink picnic tea. Whoops, I almost typed in Picnik because I

love that photo editing site so much, even though we will be losing it.

And one of my favorite pink tea cups.

Winter Whites to Go

I have been moving things around and changing some color schemes in my

cottage. First, I painted the old blue hutch in the kitchen a barn red. While I liked

the color very much, I decided that it was too dark for the room, so I am

in the process of painting it white. I removed everything from the shelves because

even though many items are thrift shop finds, they are special to me.

I had fun grouping items in a big wicker basket and was enjoying

the different textures of the whites, so ...

I am still painting the hutch because I got distracted. Does that ever

happen to you?

I'm Having A Blue Monday

going away as of April 19, 2012. I have used Picnik to create banners,

mosaics and labeling for many months and have enjoyed their features.

There are three desks in my cottage. One belongs to my hubby and two of

them are mine. I use one desk for taking care of business ~ household

accounts, taxes, the nitty gritty aspects of life. But there is another desk ~

that's where dreams happen and creativity flows.

I have collected lots of little things for this desk over the years. Little things that make

me happy and encourage the dreaming to become reality. It is probably no surprise to

you that most of these things are pink.

I have been fluffing up this little area of my cottage recently and will be showing

you more of it later. Until then, this is my contribution for Pink Saturday. I hope

that each of you have a spot in your cottage that makes your heart sing. Bentley

is always in my lap when I am at my desk and that makes my heart sing too.

Egg Cups

I love egg cups. I only have a few of them.

I hope to find some more. They are such a sweet and gentle way to start

the day.

I know that there are new ones, but I think the vintage ones are

the sweetest of all.

The snow is starting to fall here. We may actually be getting the big

snowfall they predicted for today. I hope we get snowed in so that I can

read blogs all day!

Setting Up Camp

We have designed the plan for our new cabin. We will be breaking

ground this spring and hoping to be moved in by summer. I am so excited

about decorating it. It will have a vintage look with inherited pieces from

family and bits and pieces I have been collecting. I found this Campfire

Marshmallow tin recently. It's a reproduction of an authentic tin used to

store marshmallows. I had to laugh because the tin says it's the "original food".

Old kerosene lamps and vintage signs. We'll be fly fishing up there because our

property is walking distance to the little Salmon River. Lot's of wildlife too. The last

time David was up to survey the lot, he and his friend found elk and bear droppings.

I looked at google maps and there is nothing between the back side of our

neighborhood until you cross the Snake River deep into the mountains of

eastern Oregon. Thousands of stars at night. Peaceful and serene.

I certainly have changed. I use to be such a city girl consumed with clothes and

shoes and nightlife. Now I'm the LL Bean boots gal stocking up on cast iron pots

and reproduction Campfire Marshmallow tins. I like the new me much better!

Indoor Gardening

It's cold outside. We have not had any snow to soften the landscape outside and

my yard looks gray and sad. My Mom and I were looking at a lovely garden in

an old Traditional Home magazine yesterday and I started to dream about spring.

Spring is still a couple of months off, so I'll just be happy to satisfy my desire to

play in the dirt by doing a bit of indoor gardening.

I took some florist wire and created a fairly sturdy hoop ...

and wound my ivy plant around it. That makes me happier. Oh, and don't you

love that miniature African Violet? I sure do!

I wonder what Marty is doing today?

Congratulations Genevieve!

Congrats Genevieve! You may not have won the Miss America crown last night,

but you have won the hearts of those of us in Idaho!

Genevieve's mom, Mary Beth, is a friend of mine. Mary Beth has told me of

all the work Genevieve has done to raise the self esteem of young women all over

this country. I am very proud that Genevieve represented the state of Idaho in

the Miss America pageant last night! You have a bright future ahead of you

Genevieve and we are proud of you!

Putting My Life Into Focus

I received a new camera for Christmas. I have started taking pics and am trying to

get used to all the features. I never had any features with my old one. It was very

antiquated and although I love vintage ~ new technology has it's place in my world

too.

Hopefully this camera will bring my life around the cottage into better focus.

I'll be able to take movies too ~ so plan on viewing the antics of Bentley

in the coming months. He is quite a little ham.

I think I will need a tripod too. Oh and it always helps ...

I am always rushing around. Every day seems to be jam packed with

obligations and responsibilities. I seldom sit down and just relax.

But today I have vowed to take a few minutes just for me.

Pull Up A Chair And Get Creative

Every creative space needs a chair and here is mine. I painted this

sweet little vintage chair white and added a thrift shop cushion.

Of course I always feel the need to accessorize, so I'll be adding this

adorable thrift shop plate that was a gift from my friend Maria, and this

little mini wicker chair to the mix. You know how much I love minis
especially miniature chairs.

Bentley ~ what do you think ~ should I add your great grandmother's cat

to my creative space? I'm just teasing Bentley. I know how you feel about

cats! I will have to think of a way to incorporate this matelasse throw.

Next I will start painting my desk. I paid a full $5.00 for it at a junk yard.

It's kind of funky ~ but I love it! Hope to show it to you soon.

Adding Elements for My Creative Space

Yesterday I showed you the 25 cent bookends I found at a thrift shop. I have

since painted them and did my best to preserve the vintage decals because I

just love to preserve those bits of nostalgia.

Since I want my creative space to be feminine, I am adding two vintage floral prints

framed in the loveliest (well at least I think so) shade of green. I love the square

frames too. So I have a way to keep some books in place and a couple of

prints and I have also added a sweet little demitasse cup that is holding my

miniature African Violet ~ which unfortunately is not blooming at the

moment. I hope it will be soon as I watched a youtube lesson on caring

for these little gems and am following the instructions faithfully, so fingers

crossed!

It's really fun putting all of this together and what makes it even more

satisfying is that I am using what I already have. Every creative work space

needs a chair ~ so that's what I'll be showing you next time.

Why Is She Showing Us This?

Good Question!

Why am I showing you this and what is it that I am showing you?

A pair of bookends found at a thrift shop several years ago. I imagine that

it was probably a project for a shop class at school. Two blocks of wood

turned into bookends, stained and shellacked. Perhaps the mom had

some decals which were added to make the bookends more decorative.

No matter ~ I fell in love with them and spent a whole quarter buying them.

This still does not answer the question why I am showing them to you.

Well...

I share a home office with my husband David. I want my own little corner that

is just mine. You know what I mean ~ a little spot that reflects my own

personality. A little spot where I can day dream and let the creativity flow.

So, the bookends are the start of refinishing my own little spot. I am

refinishing them and adding them to other little things that I have lovingly

collected. You will have to be patient as I start pulling it all together,

but ...

I promise you that over the next few days I will reveal more of it's elements

until the big reveal happens.

Hours to Cook ~ 10 Minutes to Eat!

The heart of the home ~ the command center. The place where I pan saute,

bake, broil and have worked through all of the recipes in Julia Child's

Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volumes 1 and 2.

But ...

You know what? No matter how many hours I spend in front of this stove

attempting to create a culinary masterpiece ...

IT ONLY TAKES 10 MINUTES TO EAT!!!

And it all happens again tomorrow for Sunday dinner!

It Pays To Be Patient

Sometimes when I am shopping I come across a piece of furniture or a plate or

some fabric that I love, but think it is too expensive, so I pass it up. That's how I

felt when I first saw this dish at a consignment shop. Loved it, but thought to

myself ~ too pricey. I set it back down and walked away, hoping that the price

might be reduced, and if should sell before that happened it was just not

meant to be mine.

The other day I was in the same shop looking for a chandy for a remodel job when I

spotted this dish once again and noticed the price was reduced. This time it was a

bargain and I could not pass it up. It pays to be patient!

Confronting the Childhood Bully

experience with a bully when I was a young girl and just finished writing

What's On My Plate for 2012?

2012 ~ a new year and new ideas. So what is on my plate for this year?

I have had so much fun blogging over the past couple of years. It's hard to believe

that I will have been blogging for a full two years on January 21st. Wow ~ the

time has really flown by.

I want to continue to grow as a blogger. I want to have fun and to entertain you.

I want to focus on more easy to create and inexpensive decorating ideas. But, this

blog will always have a light heart.

I also have another blog ~ Susan's Path. This is my on-line journal. It's a place
where I can discuss topics that I feel passionate about. Sometime the topics will
be light and fun, but at other times they will be more serious. So, if you want to
get into my head a bit and to share your own comments ~ that's the place to go.
My first topic of discussion is Adult Bullies. The live on the adult playground
and are a force to be faced. I'll be posting later today on that topic.

Black and White Nostalgia is a blog I started a while ago. I created this blog because
I long to take more artsy pics and I thought that this would push me in that
direction. I have not done too much with this recently, but plan to spend more
time there in 2012. Finally ~ there is Ash Tree Cottage Minis because I just
love miniature dollhouses.

And ...

I finally have a new camera. The entire time I have been blogging I have been

taking pics with an old cast off camera from my hubby. It has a whopping 2.1 mega pixs.

I have jumped up to a new Fuji (thank you David) and it has a zoom lens too.

Now I will be able (at least that's the plan) to take better pics and something more

than vignettes because that's about all I could do before.

I have loved every minute I have spent sharing bits of my cottage with you and

getting to know all of you. I am looking forward to a fun filled year here

at Ash Tree Cottage with my buddy Bentley. I hope that we will bring some

sunshine to you throughout 2012!

It Was a Very Pink Year

I really enjoyed creating posts for Pink Saturday in 2011.

Here are my favorite pink posts. I love collecting anything vintage and pink,

especially dishes, fabrics and prints.

I had fun bringing pinks together for decorating schemes.

What can be better than pink for dollhouse creations? I had so much fun

creating this pink bed for my dollhouse.

Sewing and crafting with pink floral fabric is delightful.

There were pinks in the spring.

And pinks in the fall. Remember the pink floral pumpkin?

And a little pink cottage for under the Christmas tree. I must make

more of these for next year. I wanted to make a whole village, but

just did not have the time.

And finally ending up the year with my pink ice skate. I created this skate

for a special Christmas card for my friend Juli who has worked very hard to

become a very good figure skater.

It was a wonderful Pink year!

Time Flies When You Are Having Fun!

Bentley and I had lot's of fun around the cottage in 2011.

Let's see ~ we have been setting up tea parties in the garden.

Painting furniture. I think my hubby is afraid that every piece of

furniture we own will be painted white. He does not need to worry ~

I am painting the hutch in the kitchen red!

We have been designing tablescapes. There is that chicken again!

And making miniature furniture.

Don't you love those little saddle shoes? I sure do!

Setting up a fun and feminine tent in the backyard.

And playing in the garden.

Painting yet more furniture. Bentley ~ have you noticed that your

Momma is a bit obsessed with dogs?

And turning more trash into treasure.

It's been a very fun year!

What's Your Decorating Inspiration?

I am experiencing (as are many of you) the after Christmas let down.

While the cottage looks all warm and cozy with all of the Christmas

decorations still up, soon it will all come down and everything will look

a bit less cheerful.

What to do to spice up the couple of cold and dreary months ahead?

Decorate!

All of the reds in the Christmas decorations have made me realize that I want to

use more reds in my accents. Red and white. Happy and clean and uplifting.

Oh and chickens. My heart was stolen by my neighbor's chickens. I never

knew how very fond of them I could be.

David and Bentley have prevented me from having a few running around our

yard ~ but I can still enjoy their presence in other ways.

My Mom has decided she would like to have some chickens. There is a little cottage

just one block from my own that is for sale. It is a really sweet little place. Mom's

neighbors have been moving into assisted living facilities (neither of us want that for

her) and she may be ready for a change. If we bought that little cottage for her she

would be close to Bentley ~ AND she could have her own chickens and a

chicken coop. I am going to share a sweet design I found on William Poole's

site of a Grandma's cottage. The one down the street is very, very similar and we

could make it the cutest little cottage!

So once again ~ chickens are inspiring!

Oh and one more thing before I let you go. Stop over and visit our BFF

Brenda she found a wonderful source for crafting fabrics. She bought the

cutest rooster print you all must see. I don't know about you, but little

sewing and crafting projects just relax me and make me feel all warm and

cozy!

AND ~ I am about to start painting my kitchen hutch. It's currently blue with a

white interior and Laura Ashley fabric covering the shelves. You know the one,

you have all seen it. Well, if I get the nerve it will be painted red with white

shelves.

Merry Christmas to All

Christmas Eve ~ my favorite night of the year.

My heart is filled with such great joy and peace knowing that

tomorrow we will be celebrating the birth of Our Savior.

May we all remember the true meaning of Christmas not just tonight

and tomorrow ~ but all year long.

Survey ~ What Are You Serving For Christmas Dinner?

What is your traditional Christmas Dinner?

Is it roast turkey or ham, roast beef or goose?

Or perhaps you are a vegan or vegetarian.

Our traditional Christmas dinner is a very British one.

Although the Brits are not known for their fine cuisine (sorry to all of

my British friends) we always serve roast beef. It's a standing rib

roast served with horseradish sauce, Yorkshire pudding (in honor

of Bentley's roots) and Brussel sprouts (much to hubby's chagrin).

Dessert is always a pecan pie ~ especially for David who is from Texas.

One year while I was living in Bahrain, I had 25 friends over for Christmas

dinner. I had the only Christmas tree ~ a spindly little thing shipped in from

Jordan. I roasted a turkey which took forever because the thermostat in my

oven was not working. I ended up putting the bird in my neighbor's cooker.

Guests brought specialties like smoked salmon from Scotland consumed with

bottles of champagne. One fellow brought over caviar from the Caspian Sea

which was excellent. He brought along several bottles of Russian Vodka

that he froze in ice. By the time we got around to the turkey everyone was

feeling extremely jolly. We were all wearing those funny little hats that come

out of the Christmas poppers. I steamed plum pudding in a pressure cooker and

that's what we had for dessert. Everyone told me it was the best Christmas

party they had ever attended. Must have been ~ because the next morning

my house was a mess.

But ... one of the guests thought to send his houseboy over in the morning

to clean up! What a blessing that was.

favorite memory of a Christmas celebration?

The best thing about celebrating Christmas is sharing it with those

you love. For me, those the best memories of all!

Christmas at Mom's House

Let's go visit my Mom's house.

Her mantel is decorated for the holidays. That frame over the

mantel came from my Great Grandmother's farm in Pennsylvania.

Daddy brought the sconces back from a trip to Rome. We are the

Late Night in the Mini Christmas Cottage

Holiday Recycle Wrap-it-Up

I like to recycle for two reasons, well actually three.

First, is the obvious because I am a conservationist.

Secondly, in a small house we make use of every inch of

space, and that includes spots to store wrapping materials.

And finally ~ who can afford to buy new all the time in

this current economy?

So ~ here is a Christmas wrap from an used brown paper bag.

Some white craft paint. A few twigs and a pine cone found on

a walk, and left over yarn from a crochet project.

Suddenly I have a sweet little forest scene for pennies from items

I already had. No trip to the store for wrapping paper.

Holiday Ice Skates

I started skating when I was very young.

All through elementary school and high school I went skating

on weekends with my friends. I loved everything about it ~ the

crisp cold air, cute little skating skirts, hot chocolate by the fire

in the clubhouse.

I made this little ice skating ornament for the tree with pink laces

and a pink pom pom.

I have not skated for a while, but am hoping that there will be a

new pair of skates for me under the Christmas tree this year. And

tonight I will be watching The Bishop's Wife staring Cary Grant,

Loretta Young and David Niven. I love the skating scene in that movie!

Decorating My Front Porch for Christmas

Although I love Christmas lights on the cottage, I also enjoy making

my front porch look festive for the holidays. I love coming home, walking

through the front gate and seeing a cheerful and welcoming display of

jolly, holly, fun.

Remember the movie Miracle on 34th Street when Santa leaves his cane

by the fireplace to let Maureen O'Hara and John Payne know that he did

indeed give Susie her Christmas wish of her very own house? Well that is

one of my favorite scenes, so I decorated a vintage walking stick in memory

of that scene. It's my little reminder that wishes do come true.

I always like to hang up Christmas stockings on the porch as well

as on the mantel inside! Never hurts to be prepared.

A wrapped present on the wicker rocker. Actually, there is nothing inside,

just an empty box ~ but it still looks festive.

Another little wicker rocker with some Christmas cheer. There is more to

do. I want to put a tree on the porch this year. Oh and David needs to hang

the snowflake lights and I need to add the candles in the windows. Come back

While I was decorating the front porch, the postman arrived. Bentley was

there to greet him. Bentley loves our postman and is always anxious to

greet him with a big kiss. It's really funny because Bentley raises a paw and

waves to him and gives him a big grin too when he walks through the gate.

Christmas in Mom's Solarium

Welcome to a sneak peek of the Christmas decorations in my

Mom's solarium. Don't you love this white faux fur throw on the

wicker chair with the Christmas wreath on top? That was Mom's

quick decorating touch as I was busy snapping away pics

Everything in Mom's solarium is white with soft pink and green touches,

so we decided to go with a white tree. Mom does not remember where

she bought this tree, but she is one good shopper because it looks soft and

pretty in her room.

Do you see that sweet little vintage angel? There are five of them and they

are very old. Mom had them long before I was born and I always love

seeing them on her tree.

And this adorable little lamb. He's an oldie too but also a cutie!

These sweet little angels belonged to my Grandmother. They are dressing up the

space under the tree. You just knew I would have to slip in some pink for

Pink Saturday.

And finally there is my little pink house under the tree. I knew it would

find a happy home in Mom's solarium.

A Quilt Lover's ChristmasTablescape

My Mother-in-Law, Leila, who passed away on October 31st, was a

quilter. She made us many lovely quilts that we treasure. Although I have

played around with three Christmas tablescapes now, I have decided to go with

this one because it uses two of my favorite quilts.

This red and white one is draped over the deacon's bench.

This charming quilt is pieced together in what Lee called her French style

quilt (no batting). Leila loved France and anything that had a French flair. It took her a

very long time to cut and piece together all of these little squares. She made three of

them. One for each of her two daughters and one for me.

Leila may have been a social worker by profession, but in her heart she was

an artist. I hope that this tablescape will bring back many happy memories of her

for her son David.

I love quilts too. So sweet, so humble, so comforting.

What Happened to All of the Christmas Boxes???

I am home from work today and I thought that I was going to get lots of

Christmas decorating done. At least that was the plan!

I brought down boxes from the attic and I thought that I had everything

that I needed, but I must be missing a box or two. So, it's off to hunt for

missing decorations. I guess I won't make it on time for the Porch Decorating

Party over At The Picket Fence. So ...

I'll just have to take pics of my porch later. Until then, I'll leave you with

these few pics from my kitchen. Oh ~ in case you are wondering, I have not

baked any cookies yet either. I better start getting busy!

Christmas Decorating Inspiration

Like all of you, I look at magazines and shops for inspiration ~

especially for Christmas decorating ideas. I saw this cute basket filled

with little pillows in the December 2007 of County Home magazine.

I do miss that publication! Anyway, I did not copy it exactly, but

used the theme to create my own little bowl of holiday pillows.

Mine has a dog (gee ~ that's a shocker) as a centerpiece of the design. I made

these little pillows from scraps of fabric, felt and trim and added bits of

Christmas as well. Instead of using a wicker basket, I used a red and white

vintage enamel bowl.

Not a complete copy cat ~ but thanks to Country Home for some

great inspiration!

My Tiny Pink Christmas Cottage

I have been in my studio creating once again. Here is my tiny pink Christmas

cottage. It is nestled in snow in "my little world".

I made it from the cardboard of a Ritz Cracker box. Not to worry though,

in my little world the building codes are quite flexible.

I may need to add more houses and tiny shops and a church to keep

this little cottage company. What do you think?

A Winter Woodland Dinner

We are so fortunate in Idaho to have some of the most spectacular forests

in the United States. Not far from my home, the forests begin. There are

majestic mountains, Ponderosa pines, beautiful glacier lakes and many

rivers and streams.

I love it up in the woods, so I have created a winter woodland theme tablescape.

I found these charming dinner plates at one of my favorite shops ~

Forget Me Not Antiques. It is the Welcome Home pattern by J&G Meakin of

Staffordshire, England. Such a cozy and welcoming winter scene.

I love these tags too. I added them to mini grape vine wreaths to use as

napkin rings.

All of these dishes and napkins and accessories will end up in our cabin.

I think we have a plan selected now and David has chatted with a log

broker. We are very excited and hope to be spending Christmas of 2012 in

our new getaway in the woods.

Let the Christmas Decorating Begin!

I hope that everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. We did!

Last night the kitchen was cleaned up and the china and silver safely

stored in the hutch. And now ...

One of my favorite days of the year! No, I'm not fighting the crowds at the mall!

But I am starting to pull out the Christmas decorations. I have been itching to do

that, but I hold off until the day after Thanksgiving because I love to savor the

specialness of each holiday!

Of course, I might run over to a few of my favorite antique shops to see if there is

something special to add to this Christmas holiday decorating! Which reminds me ...

Tomorrow has been designated Small Business Saturday. Please go visit the

independent shops in your area. These small shop owners work hard to compete

with the big box stores and they often have such lovely merchandise and are

really happy to deliver great customer service. Remember Kathleen Kelly's "The

Shop Around the Corner" in the movie "You've Got Mail"? What a charming

shop that was and it was staffed with really knowledgeable people.

So there's your assignment ~ shop the small independent shops too!

So now that there are lots of leftovers in the fridge, a nip is in the air, and I

am all excited about decorating ~ I will leave you with this. I have been

dreaming of decorating my Mom's solarium all in pink and green for Christmas.

She does not know about this yet, so it will be a big surprise for her. I will be

sharing it all with you each Pink Saturday in December! In fact, I am headed

In answer to your questions ~ yes Bentley had turkey yesterday! He's

It's All in the Details

What makes your home uniquely yours? Have you ever walked into

someone's home and had the feeling that the owners purchased every little

detail from a popular store? A house that has been so depersonalized that

it does not look like a home?

As a designer, I have seen it before. I once had a client who did not think

that the members of her family were very attractive, so she thought that she

should keep the photos of the models who came in the picture frames she purchased

because they were so much more attractive than her family members.

How sad is that?

As we fluff our cottages this week and in the coming weeks getting ready to

welcome family and friends, let's remember to keep the "home" in our cottages.

Let's let our personalities shine through. It's what makes each of us

unique and special!

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost a week away, but it is.

It's truly one of my favorite holidays. I am taking a short vacation and am really

enjoying getting ready for the big feast. I'm playing around with centerpiece ideas

for the table. Polishing silver, getting the crystal ready and just having so much

fun playing house.

I have decided to go with a rustic look with a touch of elegance too.

I love combining vintage well loved family heirlooms with some newer

pieces too.

This pearl handled flatware is from David's Mom. She purchased it

years ago from Carl Forslund in Michigan. I think she would

have been happy to know that we are treasuring it now.

So now I am back to fluffing the cottage and planning my menu and

visiting with you!

Cozy Cottage Elements

I want to thank all of you who come to visit me. I have not been very good about

returning the favor, and I do apologize. Life has been very hectic around my

cottage for the last several weeks. My Mom was ill several times, my hubby

David was too and then my Mother-in-Law passed away.

I have been trying to balance all of my obligations, and frankly, blog reading

just took a back seat. Now things seem to be settling down to a more

normal pattern and I will be happily following and commenting on all of

the great and creative blogs I love so much.

So until then, here are a couple of mosaics I have put together to bring the "cozy"

feeling back into my little cottage and to share than coziness with you.

Cabin Dreams

David and I have been dreaming of the cabin we want to build on the lot we bought

back in September. I have been gathering up things I want to put in the cabin before

it's even built. I know ~ it's the cart before the horse.

These Ralph Lauren tartan plates are for the cabin and so are the birch bark

candles. It seems like every time I go into a thrift or consignment shop I find

something that would be perfect for up north.

We are going to have to decide on a plan soon, because we need to submit it to

the home owner's association for approval, then start pulling permits and also

get our logs ordered from the mill. Thankfully we live in logging country, so

we can have our pick of logs.

We already know that we want post and beam construction, open concept and a

big stone fireplace as well as a wood stove. However, when we start altering

plans, we are a bit like Cary Grant and Myrna Loy in Mr Blandings Builds His

Dream House. It's he wants, she wants, but we have a budget and it's not

a huge one.

Primarily I want it to be cozy and charming and filled with vintage decor. A real

vintage camp style place that our friends and family will love to visit. A place for the

skis, snowboards, snowshoes and fly fishing gear. A table where we can play Scrabble

and put jigsaw puzzles on days when we are snowed in.

A dinner bell out on the back porch that we can ring when dinners ready and a

martini flag that we can fly when it's time for cocktails.

It won't be spring until we will be able to break ground, but until then I will

be gathering up vintage items to turn our cabin into a cozy nest.

Wowsa Reds!

I am starting to think about my plans for Thanksgiving dinner. I found these

adorable red silicone utensils at my local co-op the other day.

I just could not pass them up because they are so cute and red! Look at

that sweet little whisk ~ I love it.

Back to Thanksgiving dinner. Last year everyone loved the turkey, the yam

casserole, the roasted Brussel sprouts and the cranberry sauce.

The stuffing ~ not so much.

If any of you have a great stuffing recipe that your family and friends all love,

please, please let me know.

Hanging on to Autumn

Have you noticed all of the Christmas decorations in the stores?

In some stores they were up before Halloween.

I am a traditionalist however, and as much as I love Christmas, I refuse

to put up any decorations for my favorite holiday until the day after

Thanksgiving. Therefore I am showing you my autumnal cloche on the

entry table. I'm hanging on to Autumn and enjoying each minute.

Sweet Dreams Pink

In Memory of Leila

My Mother-in-Law Leila passed away on Monday after a long battle

with Alzheimer's.

Tomorrow on November 3rd there will be a memorial service for her.

It would have been her 87th birthday.

She lived in Houston, Texas and will be missed by

her family.

Rest in peace Leila.

Autumn Cloche

It's been crazy busy around here, and I am trying to get a bit of autumn

decorating done inside while I am busy painting my living room.

I planned to get the living room painted weeks ago, but everyone has been

sick and we have been running in for doctor's visits.

Right now everyone, including me, seems to be healthy, so it's back to painting

and arranging for my husband's team of carpenters to start some projects in

my house before we redo my Mom's kitchen.

So here is my little autumn cloche for Marty's Fall Cloche Party,

because I certainly did not want to miss that! I can't wait to see the other

cloche's!

Bentley is napping after a very busy weekend. He'll need his rest

before the trick or treater's show up tonight.

Looking For Adventure

I love to travel. Before I was married to David, I traveled the globe. I lived abroad for

three years and I was lucky enough to visit many exotic places.

It's harder to get away these days. My husband and I own a business. There are family

obligations and responsibilities, so taking off for exotic foreign lands is just

not on my schedule any more. But it does not mean that I don't have the

urge to get away. It just means that the trips are closer to home.

So out come the maps and the dreams of taking off for a bit of fun. I love these old

cameras. Even though today's digital ones take great pics, the old cameras have so

much character ~ don't you agree?

There's a New Roo in Town!

There's a new Roo at Ash Tree Cottage and he's a nifty thrifty looker

who is currently on my table top before he makes his way to his new

roost as the back porch doorstop. Quite the looker don't you think?

I love a good bargain and he will really come in handy keeping the wind from

slamming the back door shut!

A Pink Flowered Pumpkin

I have seen a lot of the decoupaged pumpkins everywhere, but I wanted to come

up with something special for Pink Saturday.

So I took a white pumpkin, my craft paints, some ribbon and a couple of

artificial flowers and created my very own girly pink pumpkin.

I am going to take it over to my Mom's house because I think it will look

great in her solarium which is all white with touches of pink and green.

Soup's On ~ Hearty Beef Barley

Yesterday I showed you a few of my favorite soup tureens with a promise

that I would share my Beef and Barley soup recipe, so here it is.

Let's collect the ingredients:

1/2 to 3/4 lb lean beef stew meat

1 - 32 oz container beef stock or broth

1/2 large onion, chopped

1 to 3 cloves chopped garlic (we love lots)

3 to 4 peeled and chopped carrots

1 to 2 chopped celery ribs and don't forget the leaves

1/2 cup pearl barley

S & P to taste and 1 bay leaf

EVOO

In a 3 quart soup pot, add a thin film of extra virgin olive oil to just coat the

bottom of the soup pan. While you pat the beef chunks dry with paper towels, get

that oil screaming hot. Now I don't salt my meat at this point because I want to

thoroughly brown my meat to give the stock a rich, deep flavor.

I only brown a few pieces at a time because I want the meat to brown and not stew.

Just pull out the brown chunks and add more until all are thoroughly browned.

When you have completed this step, you will have brown bits left in the pot. This is

good! Now add the chopped onion and celery. This is when I add my Kosher salt and

pepper. Saute until onions become translucent, then add garlic and continue to

saute, followed by the carrots. I just let the carrots soak up these flavors a bit and then

I add a splash of whatever red wine I have around to blend in all of the brown bits.

You can skip this step, but if you are worried about the alcohol, it all burns off in

the cooking. Add the reserved beef chunks, all of the stock and bay leaf. Cover and simmer for 1/2 to 2 hours. Add the barley and continue to cook another 30 to 45 minutes.

Salt and Pepper to taste if needed.

You will have a hearty and healthy soup. I like to serve this soup with assorted

greens and a simple vinaigrette. A crusty baguette is yummy with this soup as well,

along with a glass of Pinot Noir or a Merlot.

This recipe will serve 2 - 4. Bon Appetit!

Soup Tureen Time

I love this time of the year when there is a chill in the air and it's the perfect time

for making soups and stews.

It's fun to serve family and friends homemade soup from a vintage

tureen. There is nothing more comforting than coming home to the lovely

aroma of soup simmering on the stove.

Tomorrow I will be sharing my recipe for beef and barley soup. It's a

hearty soup that you can easily make a meal from served with crusty bread

and a salad. I will be sharing lots of my soup recipes with you. If you are

a vegetarian or a vegan, I have recipes for you too.

Bentley's New Girl Friend

Here she is ~ Daisy!

Isn't she the cutest little girl? She is a Maltese puppy and her Momma is my

groomer Tina. Tina brought her by yesterday and I spent some time with

this sweet girl while Bentley was being groomed. She is so precious!!

It was a lovely warm and sunny morning on the porch so I set up a cozy bed

for Daisy with a pink and white quilt, a pillow and a teddy bear for her to

snuggle up to. Because ~ after we played for a while she started to get sleepy.

Puppies do so much napping and she was soon sound asleep. I just sat by her

while drinking my tea. She and Bentley will have so much fun playing

together in the future. Bentley is already smitten!

Table Tops and Chair Seats

I manage to fill every available table top and chair seat with something.

Vignettes, baskets full of crisp red apples ...

And quilts and of course lots of pillows. Then there are the fall

decorations and before long ...

It will be time to add the Christmas decorations.

Let's just say that I make use of each and every decorating space!

Here Comes the Paint Again!

A while ago I found 4 maple Windsor Comb Back chairs and a table

for $50.00. I sold the table for $50.00 and so the chairs were free.

I plan to use them with a old farmhouse style pine table that I painted

heirloom white and distressed, but I wanted the chairs to pop, so I

decided to paint them black. The first chair I completed is still out gassing,

so I decided to leave it outside for a bit, but could not resist creating a

little vignette with my thrift shop tea cart.

Y'all know me and my vignettes!

I just can't seem to help myself. I call it playing with my finds.

Maybe there is a support group for those afflicted with

vignette obsession.

But ... since I'm not hurting anyone else, or myself ...

I'm just going to call it fun!

Boo For the Porch

I'll let you in on a little secret ~ I'm not good at reproducing a scary Halloween

scene. One of my very closest friends from childhood, who now lives in an

Atlanta suburb, goes all out for Halloween. Dry ice, grave yard in the front yard,

skeletons and ghosts hanging from trees. Spooky sounds as you walk up

the path leading to her house. She plans for weeks, and the kids love it!

I am more of the toddler set. Happy smiling pumpkins, sunny mums ~ you get

the picture. I have tried ~ but I just can't do it. I still get freaked out when I watch

the movie "Psycho". I know what's coming during the shower scene ~ but it still

scares me. I can't begin to tell you how long it took me to be able to shower when

no one else was home!!!

What was the name of that movie where Jack Nicholson breaks in the door and shouts

"I'm back!"

Scares me to pieces! So if you are looking to find a really scary scene on my

front porch, you are bound to be disappointed.

I will be happily handing out candy on Halloween to the little ones who

still like the smiling pumpkins like me. Kids are so sophisticated these days

that they will need to be really little super heros, or sweet peas wearing tutus

to enjoy my Halloween decorating. Although ... I went hog wild and

put out a black crow this year, so maybe there is hope for me yet.

At least I have not erected a jungle gym full of birds ....

oops too scary to even think about!!!

Faded Pinks

It's time to start changing out the pinks on my front porch. Although I

love the soft muted colors, it's time to bring out the warmer more vibrant

colors for autumn and the winter months to come.

I still have some pink flowers in my pots on the steps leading to the porch, but it won't

be long before they will disappear with the colder nights.

But for now, I will enjoy the last of their beauty despite the falling

leaves surrounding them.

Bentley has been having so much fun playing in his yard
