Who Can Answer This Question?

To the left of the walnut tree trunk and behind the
deep ground cover ~ is a type of rose that grows up and
over the fence between my garden and the garden
next door where Amy's chickens live (ie Thelma and
the girls)

Here is my question ~ what type of rose is it?  I did not
plant it, it was here when we moved in years ago.  It only
blooms at this time of year and for a short time.  My yard is in
deep shade, so it's not a sun lover at all.  I'm quite sure it's a
type of rose because the bush has thorns and the buds look like
rose buds.

Neither Amy nor I do anything special for it.  It is just
happy to be.  It lives between two big black walnut trees
and I have been told that nothing likes to grow near black
walnuts, but the ground cover in the foreground and the rose bush
are quite content.

Any guesses?

Bentley is completely hidden in that ground cover and
is chasing cats through it daily.  It's a full time job!!

Love,
Susan and Bentley

  1. If you really want to know ~ tale a flower and a leaf to your local garden center (plant nursery , not the plant section at a store) and they should be able to tell you.

  2. I imagine it is an old fashion rose bush of some type that has adapted over the years. I have a black walnut tree and I do not have trouble growing anything under it? but I have always heard that. Enjoy it, it is beautiful!

  3. Susan, it must be a type of antique rose and it's hard to tell by seeing it so far away. Maybe your local nursery will be able to tell you, or you might have a rose group that would know. It could be a wild rose, but I don't know. What ever it may be, it's beautiful, Char

  4. Looks like some type of flora-bunda the leaf has a rosa rogusa look, but it's difficult to tell. I'd bring a sample to a garden center, they should be able to tell you.

  5. Hard to tell from a distance and I'm no rose expert. I agree - take it to your local garden center.

  6. Looks like it could be a Rosa Rogusa is also my guess. I had one once and had troubles with it. Moved it into a very shaded area and it bloomed once. Sure would be nice to know. I have lots of shade I would love to have roses growing in..
    Have a great day..

  8. I would send a cutting to the Texas Rose Rustlers. I read about them in Victoria Magazine. They are an organization dedicated to locating and preserving heirloom roses. They also identify them when they can. Their website is:

    www.texasroserustlers.com

Let us know what you find out about your rose!
