The Makeover Compromise

Those of you who follow my blog know that when we moved into our
house in Texas, that I promised my husband David that I would not
paint the paneling in the family room.  I have honored that promise, but
I had one tiny request.  At the far end of the room is a very large built-in
bookcase.  The back of the bookcase is the same paneling.  I wanted to find
a way to break up all the paneling and highlight the backs of the shelves
while keeping the cozy characteristic of the room and NOT painting.

So I found a check with that is red with a cream background.  I showed it
to David first, because I wanted his approval.  He was fine with my
choice, so I have forged on backing the shelves.

While time consuming ~ taking everything off the shelves etc, It's been
quite simple.  At first I was going to cut and apply the fabric to foam
core.  Then I discovered Removable Poster Tape by Scotch.  It is so
easy to use, holds the fabric firmly to the back and is super easy to
remove should you wish.

David is happy and I am happy too.  Now I just need to finish the other
eight shelves.  Oh well, if the Invest 91-L is upgraded to Tropical Storm Bill,
I won't be going anywhere anyway.  Some of the weather models have
been showing my little town as the direct hit.  We could get 8 to 12
inches of rain.  Not good.  We are praying that it's not anywhere near that
extreme.  Fingers crossed and prayers being said.

Big Texas Hugs,
Susan and Bentley

  2. Oh Susan!!! That looks awesome. Just the perfect touch. Your items show up so much more without the backing being too busy. Great job!!

    1. I know Baytown! We are further west in Victoria. Stay safe! The weather channel is talking about the storm reaching shore tonight. I wish they would just give it a name. I am tired of calling is 91-L :-)

  7. I love the fabric you went with and the easy way you found to apply it! I had heard of using wallpaper paste to do it as you can peel it off and wash the wall then reapply a different fabric or paper when you are tired of the original and I thought that was a clever idea but this seems super simple and easy too! I am hoping that the rain is not too severe you way and the worst will pass you by. I have lots of family in Texas and I worry all the time about the weather there. I hope little Bentley has a slicker to wear just in case! :)

    1. This poster tape would be great to mount kid's art work too because it does not mar the wall. As a matter of fact, Bentley does have a little yellow rain slicker. His Grandma bought one for him :-)

  8. I love this! And what a great way to apply, I never thought of this, but am going to keep that filed away for future use. My own Mr. FrenchGardenHouse is always worried about covering up "wood" too. :) Hope you are safe from the rain…yikes!

  12. The pendulum will swing, and when everyone is sick of the pale, chipped furniture, then beautiful, warm, wood tones will be in, and your room will be all the rage...again.

  13. I love the book case like that. Perfect way to add color and be able to change it when you want. Of course, best not to tell David that changing fabric is a woman's prerogative.

  16. I have 'borrowed' your idea and am doing my hutch! It is natural wood and the back of the shelves is just the same, and in using a gingham that is a reddish/pink, it set off my Transfer Ware just beautifully! Thank you so much for sharing~
