Vintage Afternoon Bridge

Hi girls! How about coming over to play some bridge this afternoon. The coffee is ready. Make yourself comfortable at my old card table. I just love this vintage card table cover, don't you?

Do you take cream and sugar or just black?

If you need a refresher course, don't worry. I have my Mom's old contract bridge books for reference.

Here are some vintage playing cards. Can't you just hear Lucy say, "Caroline when are you going to get some new cards?? We've been playing with these same dirty old cards for ages!!" Lucy said something like that to Caroline Appleby when Ethel, Ricky and Fred bet her $50.00 that she couldn't tell the truth for 24 hours!

Okay, take off your gloves girls and lets play cards!

It's been a while since I have played. Hand me those contract bridge books will you please?? While I am refreshing my memory ... have some more coffee and go visit Suzanne for Vintage Thingie Thursday and Susan's 100th posting of Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch.

Don't peek at the other players cards Bentley, it is not fair!

Love,
Susan and Bentley

  4. Cute post! I love all the vintage items you've included, and it brings back memories of my mother's bridge parties and stories of my grandmother's! I wonder if gloves will ever come back? :-)

  6. This reminds me of my Mother in Law who has played Bridge for over 50 years. I know nothing about this game, but the idea of getting together with friends, having coffee or tea, playing a card game and talking, sounds very nice.
I love the removing of the gloves to start playing.... I can just see that.

  7. I never learned to play any kind of cards. Hard to believe, isn't it? I just adored Lucy. Funniest woman on tv. Thanks for the memory of that episode!

  9. What fun! I love your cloth. My parents taught my brother and I to play as children but there aren't many people of my generation that know how to play.

  10. I remember when my sister was in Nursing School and Card Parties where women played bridge were all the rage and were a good fund raiser back then. Am I dating myself or what!!

  19. I love to play cards (canasta, rummy) but I simply cannot remember cards. That makes Bridge impossible for me. Too bad, its such a "civilized" game! However, put me in a game of Scrabble....that's another story altogether!!

  20. Oh this brought back precious memories of my Mama and my Mother-in-love. Makes me smile. They both played bridge at least once a week, and they were really good! I have a number of my Mother-in-loves table covers. I consider them treasures, and I know that you do, too. Thank you for sharing your charming design. Cherry Kay

  23. Oh I love your cute vintage tablescape for bridge. Your story evokes memories. My great grandmother participated in a bridge club and ever so often, she'd fill her great room with card tables and lay out all sorts of goodies to eat. As a little girl, I hid under the tables, visited all of her lovely friends from table to table, and peeked at their hands. I'd love to learn how to play bridge.

    All the Best,

    Requi

  25. My Mother loved her social groups and playing bridge after she retired to Florida many years ago. I never learned how to play bridge but I have so many fond memories of playing cards with my family.

  27. Susan, that looks like a sophisticated ladies afternoon. Tea and Bridge - that sounds very British to me. You made a very nice inviting table and although I have never relly understood the rules for Bridge I would love to learn it. And surely your little Bentley would have a peek at my cards with a hidden smile. But he would be enough gentlement not to tell you what he saw. Thank you so much for sharing with us your Bridge-party, I enjoyed it very much. And give a cress to little cute Bentley.
    Greetings, Johanna

  30. Susan, cute table, love the tablecloth...I don't have a clue how to play bridge, but do know how to play pinochle! I am so happy to see you are serving coffee and not tea...black for me, please.

  31. What a fun post. Love all your vintage thingies. I wish we'd had room to keep my grandparents' cribbage table. That was their thing, although I'm sure they all played bridge as well. Great music for this, too.

  32. "I can tell you word for word every episode of those Lucy shows", LOVED them all and even as a girl watching those I loved all those details. Does your old percolator still work??? They make the BEST coffee. and OH the memories that brings me. My Grandmothers looked exactly like yours, my Mom had an entire set, tray and all and "It's mine now"... I'll HAVE to get a picture of it. "Thank you SO much of reminding me of all these incredible memories that were just sparked into full vision"... You have a beautiful blog and I love to visit here.
