Wowsa Reds!

I am starting to think about my plans for Thanksgiving dinner.  I found these
adorable red silicone utensils at my local co-op the other day.

I  just could not pass them up because they are so cute and red!  Look at
that sweet little whisk ~ I love it.

Back to Thanksgiving dinner.  Last year everyone loved the turkey, the yam
casserole, the roasted Brussel sprouts and the cranberry sauce.

The stuffing ~ not so much.

If any of you have a great stuffing recipe that your family and friends all love,
please, please let me know.

What's this???  A Christmas spatula ~ I thought I said no Christmas
decorations until after Thanksgiving!

  3. Way, way back, many centuries ago....i.e., our second Christmas together, my guy and I agreed that we were not fond of traditional sage stuffing. We weren't very inventive back then, so we went to our trust Joy of Cooking to look for inspiration. We found Apple and Onion Dressing (pg.459, 1967 ed.)

We fell in love with this stuffing. Our whole family fell in love with it! We have made it every year we have a turkey. The amount of stock you use controls the moisture level (we like it on the moist side). We stuff the bird and bake extra in loaf pans. It is delicious. I heartily recommend it.

We generally use Granny Smith apples, and instead of bread crumbs we use slightly stale bread cubes (regular old white bread) cut into 1-1 1/2 in. cubes. It takes a loaf and a half (the big loaf)to make a double recipe (more than enough for 17 lb turkey).

We don't use the raisins (hubby and daughter hate raisins....sigh).

Anyway, after more than 40 years of having this stuffing, it really isn't Thanksgiving without it!

(Also there is an Onion Dressing on the previous page that is great with pork! *We don't use either the apples or olives.)

If you can't find it in Joy of Cooking, let me know and I'll copy it for you!

  4. Love all the red and I have always thought whisks to be full of whimsy-just look at the name. I do cornbread dressing because I am from the south and I do not stuff. But my mama made it and her mother before her and so on and it is good and fattening. Christmas creeps in doesn't it?

  7. I love all your red. My kitchen will be getting a few new red accessories for the holidays. Laura from the blog White Spray paint had a wonderful stuffing recipe a few days ago. I'm planning on using it this Thanksgiving.

  8. I really enjoy good dressing. My mother made the best, but I never got the hang of it. She made it the old fashion way. The one Mellodee suggest sounds very good too. Great red feature.

  10. Those are cute. I can see why you couldn't pass them up!

Back in high school, my boyfriend's aunt made the best stuffing. I never got the recipe But years later while I was working, a lady brought some stuffing that tasted just like it. I asked her and have been doing it since. It's Pepperidge Farm's cubed herb seasoned stuffing. The directions are on the back. My family likes it. Even my mom. After letting the cubes soak up the broth well, I put it in a baking dish to bake with foil over it. I take the foil off for alittle while before taking out of the oven so that it gets alittle crispy on top. (My favorite part). I forgot to mention that after the turkey is done, I pour some of it's broth over the stuffing before baking.
I don't know what I will do if they ever stuff selling this stuffing. I don't have a clue what herbs they use!

  11. I love vibriant reds. Your photos are wonderful. What is a co-op? I need to find one. LOL
As for stuffing, I use one box Mrs. Cubbisons Cornbread Stuffing and one box of the traditional. Then use the recipe on the box with chopped giblets and broth for the liquid. We are very traditional around here and don't vary much from that. I still stuff my turkey...know a lot of people don't do that anymore.

  16. How fun to get a few new tools for your holiday preparations. I love the little whisk and the towel. Good luck with your stuffing. I've cooked very few Thanksgivings so I'm no expert. I love my mom's though!

  17. This is a bonanza of red!

    WHERE RED ABIDES

A day filled with scarlet, they say,
    Can make the sad heart skip and play;
    For where red abides,
    A little bird hides
    And sings every worry away.

  19. I adore your red finds! I really need to update a few items in my kitchen, maybe I'll have to look for a little something red too!

Sorry to say I can't help you with the stuffing. I'm the only one in my family that likes it. Normally I just get the boxed time and I'm good to go! Lame I know, but true!

  20. The fabric with the cherries is one of my favorites. My napkins in that print finally wore out and I have looked for the fabric or napkins for several years to replace them.
