In Memory of Lilly

This weekend we lost a fashion icon.

Lilly Pulitzer 1931 - 2013

Lilly could have just lived a life of ease, yet she chose to
live a life of design and creativity.

She gave us a sense of fun and frivolity with her
timeless happy fashions.  She did not take life too seriously
and neither should we.

Easy elegance.

Flirty and fun.

At home.

On campus.
By the way Mom ~ where is my pledge paddle???

On the golf course.

At the beach.

And on our men ~ well trust me, my hubby has lots
of bravado and would love these pants!

Thanks for the memories dear Lilly.
Your legacy will live on for years to come.

Bentley ~ where is your pink and green?

Mom's Style/Daughter's Style ~ Can They Agree? Part 1

Hi y'all.  Come on into my kitchen.  It's a rainy and cool spring day and
I am putting together a ham casserole per hubby's request.  However, I
want to chat about merging design styles, so pull up a stool and let's
start dishing.

David, my Mom and I have been talking about moving in together.
Mom is feeling a little fragile these days and although I have a woman
coming in to help her a couple of days per week and I am there on other
days, she would feel more secure with her family around full time.
Fortunately, my dear sweet husband is fine with the idea. But ...

How To Merge Two Very Different Design Styles???

As you know, I love the ease and comfort of cottage style.  I like
pups on the slipcovered sofas, put your feet up on the coffee table
friendliness of it.  But my Mom is very different.  She likes rooms that
are quite formal.

Here is an example of a living room that appeals to my Mom.
It's elegant and formal. This room is very much like her own living room.

I am thinking about a room more like this.  One that takes sophisticated
elegance and lightens it up a bit. I love the slipcovered furniture.  Did you
notice the pup on the sofa?   An important feature because you know
that Bentley will be on every sofa and chair in the house!  I like the
sea grass carpet and the blue and white touches too.  Mom has an
extensive collection of blue and white, so I'm hoping that she will
like the idea of incorporating it into the living room.  Oh and Daddy
brought back a leopard skin rug from Africa that was a gift to him from
a business associate in Kenya.  It was in Daddy's study, but Mom
picked it up because one of their dogs started chewing on it.  Yuck!
We might just leave that out.

She has all kinds of blue and white we can choose from.  I want her to have a living room
that she will feel at home in with her favorite pieces while making it comfortable
enough for my hubby too.  While I want to tweak her style to make it a bit more
current, it still needs to have her mark on it.

Now the family room is my territory and I am thinking about a room
more like this ...

So that's it for now.  Better get back to fixin' the ham casserole so we can
go out and play for the rest of the afternoon and dinner will be a snap to
put together when we return.    Have a fun weekend everyone!

Happily Joining ~

Seasonal Sundays
Sunny Simple Sundays

Bentley just ran out of the house to see the biggest Alaskan Malamute
I have ever seen run by with a jogger.  That dog's head is bigger than
Bentley's whole body!

Pink on the Porch

I love the combination of vintage wicker and flowers.
To me it's a match made in heaven.

I love pink and green with a pop of yellow.
It's so happy and cheerful.  I adore the curled wicker
on this little rocker too.

Simple and happy ~  an all is right with the world kind
of feeling.

That's why I love wicker and flowers.
It's a favorite thing.

Bentley's favorite thing is to be able to spend so much time
playing in his yard after a long cold winter.

Hi Sugar!

I found this cute little vintage sugar shaker the other day.
It's so kitchen kitsch!  I could hardly wait to bring it home
and create a vignette.

I just knew it would fit right in with some of my reds.
And it does!

My old enamel coffee pot.  While my grind and brew
Cuisinart makes better coffee, it just does not have the
charm of the vintage enamel ones.

We should be rolling out crust for a pie or baking cookies
don't you think?

Well sugar, that's how we roll in this house.  One new piece comes in
and suddenly a new tablescape is created!  Now how about some powdered sugar
on French toast???

I am tip toeing around this morning.  Both Bentley and my hubby
are still asleep.  I am actually relishing the quiet.  Because before
long they will be up and full of enthusiasm.  Takes me longer
to get going.

Spring Has Arrived on the Front Porch

We finally have spring weather here in Idaho.  Time to tweak
the front porch.  Up until now it has been so cold that I  just
kept the porch looking like winter and did not change much
from Christmas as you can see here ...

This was my winter "lodge" look, but now ...

gone are the tartans and the evergreens and it's all light  and sunny.

I found this little creamer and sugar bowl at a thrift shop and filled them
with Johnny Jump Ups.

Brought back the birdcage and added a bunny on top
of the old chippy wash stand.

Happily Joining ~

It's early Monday morning.  Bentley had a very fun
weekend.  Lot's of running in the garden chasing squirrels.
Naps in the sunshine and Easter dinner at grandma's house.
As I am writing this post, he is curled up in his little bed
sound asleep.  So cute!

Big Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
