Surviving the Storms

This is the way Tropical Storm Bill looked as it approached Victoria.
Port Lavaca, just 28 miles to the south of us, took the direct hit.

This was a tropical storm and not a full fledge hurricane, but the only
difference between the two is wind speed.  The rains and the potential
for tornados is much the same.  The last thing anyone needed along the
Texas Gulf Coast was more rain.  We were still recovering from the
Memorial Day weekend floods.

And just two days before Bill paid his visit, we were hit with really heavy
rain.  So when the rain began again on Monday, I was really
concerned.  Bill was still waiting on the sidelines, his arrival
predicted for Tuesday.  When he did arrive, where would all this
new water go???

Early Tuesday morning, David and I moved the patio furniture
and put all the wicker furniture from the back porch away.
And then we waited.  Well, Bentley and I waited.  David went off
to work.

This patio was flooded.  Poor Bentley would stand on the porch and
look longingly at his yard.  He doesn't like rain and frankly I didn't
want him out there at all.  I am aware that snakes come out of their
little dens when it floods.  I have not seen a snake since I have been
here, but my neighbors have.

When Bill first rolled into town, the skies took on that ominous look that
seems to say take cover.  The winds picked up and little branches from the
trees came down, but not much more than that.  We did get a lot of rain
on Tuesday but we were all relieved that it was not worse.

Yet that was not the worst of it ….

Yesterday, although Bill was leaving our area and moving to the north,
a new batch of strong storms developed to the west of us bringing lightning,
thunder and huge downpours that lasted for hours.  The radio and television
blasted out continued flood warnings.  I kept hearing of road closures due
to high water.  All Bentley and I could do was pray for the best.  These
huge downpours just kept coming down hour after hour.  Then the
warnings of more strong thunderstorms that would last through the night.

Last night after we finished dinner and the kitchen was all clean, Bentley and
I braved our partially flooded street in between the raindrops.  I had to
carry him to some higher ground so that he could do his duty.  We had just
enough time to get back up to the the front porch before the rain began
again.  Once inside, David warned me that strong thunderstorms were
headed our way.

By this time I knew I had enough.  I washed my face, slapped on a moisturizer,
brushed my teeth and changed into my jammies.  Then I took an over the
counter sleeping aid and told David I was going to bed early.  Bentley
and I snuggled up, I put my eye mask on and slept through the night
like a baby.

When I awoke at 6:30 this morning, the rain had stopped and the sun
was shining.  The sun has since disappeared, but it was the brief period
of sun that gave me hope and a feeling of joy.  It reminded me that
things always look better in the morning.

The Makeover Compromise

Those of you who follow my blog know that when we moved into our
house in Texas, that I promised my husband David that I would not
paint the paneling in the family room.  I have honored that promise, but
I had one tiny request.  At the far end of the room is a very large built-in
bookcase.  The back of the bookcase is the same paneling.  I wanted to find
a way to break up all the paneling and highlight the backs of the shelves
while keeping the cozy characteristic of the room and NOT painting.

So I found a check with that is red with a cream background.  I showed it
to David first, because I wanted his approval.  He was fine with my
choice, so I have forged on backing the shelves.

While time consuming ~ taking everything off the shelves etc, It's been
quite simple.  At first I was going to cut and apply the fabric to foam
core.  Then I discovered Removable Poster Tape by Scotch.  It is so
easy to use, holds the fabric firmly to the back and is super easy to
remove should you wish.

David is happy and I am happy too.  Now I just need to finish the other
eight shelves.  Oh well, if the Invest 91-L is upgraded to Tropical Storm Bill,
I won't be going anywhere anyway.  Some of the weather models have
been showing my little town as the direct hit.  We could get 8 to 12
inches of rain.  Not good.  We are praying that it's not anywhere near that
extreme.  Fingers crossed and prayers being said.

How to Have Wrinkle Free Skin

Okay ~ I will admit, I am guilty of a teaser headline.  Well,
not completely guilty though and more on that in a moment.

Guess what ….  there is now something called an ~

Invest 91-L approaching the Gulf of Mexico and is currently
over the Yucatan peninsula.  What is an Invest???  It means
that meteorologists are investigating a potential tropical storm.
If this Invest 91-L develops into a tropical storm, it will be
named Bill.

It is conceivable, they say, that if Bill does show up at our doorstep,
he could welcome us with 12 inches of rain upon our already
saturated ground, lakes, rivers, streams and bayous.

Now my definition of Invest is, better invest in a rubber raft and/
or building an Ark!

This is my attempt to inject a bit of humor into this situation :-)
Blame it on early morning fuzziness before a nice cup of strong
coffee.  Well, David and I had a chuckle over it anyway.

Back to the topic of wrinkles.  I say, if you want to have wrinkle free
skin ~ move to the Texas Gulf Coast.  Just look at the humidity!!!
All you have to do is step outside and any wrinkle or potential
wrinkle is history :-)

Now ~ if I could just find a way to trap this into a jar I could go on
QVC and sell this bit of miraculous stuff :-)

Thanks Invest 91-L ~ or will we be referring to you as Bill soon?

Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.  We will be staying inside
watching old movies and maybe I'll get David to make us some
popcorn.  He makes the yummiest popcorn!

Bentley ~ go give your daddy a nudge and a kiss.  He'll do
anything for you.

June Cleaver Pink Pearls Pin Cushion

Yesterday afternoon I was on my laptop pinning to my Pinterest Pin Cushion
board while watching Leave It To Beaver reruns on TV.  I know what you
must be thinking wow can that girl multi-task lol.  I happened to see  pin
cushions of some dresses that were inspired by the book/movie The Help.

I saved the pins to my board and then I started thinking ~
what a cute idea!  And then it dawned on me, why
not make a June Cleaver pin cushion???   You will know it is
June because she is wearing pearls with her apron.

So, I chose some fabric and some felt and started cutting out a pattern.
Then  I had to find something I could use as "pearls" and then I
remembered a box of Mardi Gras beads that I saved from years ago.

One strand of beads had tiny little beads on the end.  Although not white
like June's pearls would have been, I thought the color pink would go well
with the color of the dress and that somehow June would approve :-)

I thought it turned out to be cute, but then when I stuck some pins in
June, I started to feel a little creepy.  After all, I would never want
June to think it was a VooDoo doll.  I may be a writer, but I am no
Stephen King lol!

What do ya'll think?  Creepy or cute?

I took Bentley for a very long walk last night and he has been a
lounge pup all day today.  But just you wait, he will be all
refreshed and ready to take another one tonight.  That little
peanut loves his walkies!

It's Cottage, It's Cute and I Still Love It

When I first started reading blogs I really became hooked on all the
ones that focused on cottage decorating.  I remember staying up until the
wee hours of the morning Googling every cottage style blog there
was.  If there was Cottage in a blog name, I was there.

Although I also love the styles of Mario Buatta, Charles Faudree and
English country homes, I always will have some cottage decorating
in my home.

There is something so innocent, so unpretentious, so naive about it
that just draws me in and touches my soul in a comforting way.

The soft colors, the mismatched china, the ease of it all that is
so friendly.  It's all really hard to resist.  At least it is for me.

Walking into a cottage style room is a bit like eating a freshly
baked sugar cookie.  Yummy and sweet and uncomplicated.
Completely unaware of any problems in life.

A cottage style room just spreads out it's welcoming arms as
if to say ~ Come on in.  I'll put a smile on your face.

Styles may come and go, yet I think the cottage style is cute and
I still love it.

If you want some sugar ~ go visit my Cottage Cuteness board on
Pinterest.  It's loaded with all things cottage and cute.
