Revisiting the Dressing Table

When I was a little girl I had a dressing table in my bedroom.
It had the loveliest, frilliest skirt, a pretty vanity mirror and lamps
and I kept my jewelry box and perfumes on top.  I had that
dressing table until I went away to college.  Then my parents
moved and Mom gave the table away.  But I am going to have a
dressing table once again when we move into the house in Victoria.

This is the dressing room portion of the master bath.  Oh how I long to
tweak this room!  Right off the bat I am thinking that I want to
brighten it up.  Trying to decide if it will be with paint, or perhaps
a faded shabby chic style wallpaper.  I want to change the mirror and
that ceiling light you can see in the reflection of the floor to ceiling
mirror in the background.  Since sconces won't work, I am thinking
about vintage vanity lamps.  I won't skirt the table because I love all
the drawer space.  I do have the perfect vintage chair to use instead
of a stool.  Oh and I will change the cabinet hardware too.  Maybe
add some trim to accent the drawers too and perhaps repaint the
whole dressing table to give it a more custom look.

So now I am busy collecting ideas for this space.

I am revisiting the dressing table and thinking about what
a lovely space it can be.

A dreamy and private space full of things that are cherished.

A place for pampering and a place to escape from the
sometimes harsh realities of life.

Pretty little touches.

A place to keep the girly girl in each of us alive.
Yes, I am all about revisiting the dressing table idea.
It's my newest favorite thing!

  2. Susan - What a lovely project to start on. I love the vanities with the skirt but they are not practical when you have drawers for storage!!

I know you are going to have a lot of fun projects to share. Can't wait!

And Bentley certainly deserves a place of honor on that vanity!

  6. Oh I am so very jealous! I love Vanities. Friend of mine bought me a bean shaped one 2 years ago and it has a nice mirror glass on top. I put it in the basement trying to think of how to bring it back to life. I will have to search for the perfect fabric and bring it to get fitted at a decorating place. I am going to follow you on your Vanity transformation. So looking forward to you giving her life. Happy Pink Saturday Mother's Day. Grace

  7. I just realized that I have never really had an official dressing table! I feel so deprived!! I have an area in the master bathroom, which serves as one and has a bench. However, I have never had the "table". Wow - cannot wait to see what you do with your space!!

  9. I had a dressing table when I was young too....it was dotted Swiss on a butter yellow background. My mother did a lovely job putting it together and I so enjoyed it. Until I became a teenager and then the room became very 'hip' of course. I'll look forward to seeing how you make your dressing area perfectly YOU!

  12. I love having a dressing table. They can be so pretty; and a dressing table is very practical, too, especially in a home with only one bathroom.

  19. Hi Susan,

Having a dressing table like the ones you've chosen for inspiration is feminine and fun! I didn't have one growing up, but I managed to make some space in my bedroom now. It's a walnut secretaire that does double duty as a dressing table. My daughter painted a new, iron garden chair creamy white, and voila! You're moving?! I'm off to read all about it - how exciting!
